Growing up with a mother who was a victim of sexual abuse both as a child and a teenager was never something I expected to encounter. When I was a teenager, my mom talked with me about what had happened to her. Over time as I became closer to the situation because of her, I began to realize how often this occurs. How many of my friends could be in the same situation I am in and how many people around me that have potentially run into this at sometime in their lives. It opened my eyes more to the sexual abuse world and how little attention it gets. It has made me realize that our culture now puts more emphasis on showing sexual scenes in movies than it does on helping to educate men and women on sexual abuse and getting help through it. I am thankful to have a mother who is a survivor because I know the change that she has made on the people around her because the Lord has healed her heart, and changed her life.
