It’s all over social media that April is Sexual Assault Awareness month. Sexual assault/abuse can happen anyWHERE! We must always keep that in mind and be vigilant.
But, are you aware of how victims WEAR it? Hold on a minute – before you call me out thinking I’m talking about clothing, I’m absolutely NOT referring to clothing, but rather to how a victim WEARS their abuse.
The lasting effects can be endless, widely varied and feel inescapable. These effects are worn and can become part of the persona of a victim. Effects that I’ve worn in the past include insecurity, self-doubt, not feeling good enough for others, damaged goods, worthlessness and crippling shyness. These are just a few of the many effects that are “worn” after someone is abused.
Most effects are worn on the inside, but are then projected on the outside. Until a victim understands that their worth does not stem from what happened to them, that they have a voice, and that they are not alone, they will continue “wearing” these effects.
Out of the Shadows wants to help each individual understand these extremely important truths about themselves: they have a voice and they are not alone.
Are you “A-WEAR”?
